WHY CAN'T I BELIEVE IN YOU?

By John D. Loudermilk

They say I'm a fool to believe in such things
As life hereafter and such
That horseshoes and four-leaf clovers
Couldn't possibly bring me good luck
They laugh when I throw salt over my shoulder
And walk around a black cat
And whoever heard, my Lord, it's absurd
To believe in three on a match
Superstition, that's true
But I also believe in you
Why, if I believe in these things
Can't I believe in you?

Halloween's such a delight
With witches and goblins and spooks
People say "John, you're too old
To be acting like some kind of kook"
Walking around ladders with rabbits' feet dangling
And saying "God bless" when you sneeze
They tell me I'm superstitious
And I guess I'll have to agree
Superstition, that's true
And also believe in you
Why, if I believe in these things
Why not believe in you?

My dad taught me how to read fortunes
In coffee cup grounds people leave
And ever since I was a youngun
That's been a thing I believed
I believe in things like magic and dreams
And I thank my lucky stars
I believe in the basic goodness of man
And just how good we all are
If I believe dreams come true
Why can't I believe in you
Why can't I believe in you?
If, my friend, this is true
Why can't I believe in you?
Why, if I believe in these things,
Can't I believe in you?
